Around the World in Five Years

Today I'm celebrating five years of blogging as I feature my Around the World quilt. I can always remember when I began Lollyquiltz because it was on my birthday.
Never did I dream that I would have friends from around the world because I'd decided to chronicle my quilt making and sewing. It's definitely been a lovely perk!
I began this quilt in a workshop taught by Shannon Brinkley, author of Scrappy Bits Applique. She was the speaker at the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild in January. I chose to add a layer of tulle over the glued down applique and then quilted the whole thing with straight (ish) lines. This was a new-to-me technique. The other option was to applique with clear thread which my Bernina and I seem to be allergic to! This method worked out pretty well.
There ended up being a small amount of rippling in the water surrounding the continents. Oh well.....adds interest and realism, I say! The quilt still lays flat and I like the overall effect. I'm deciding, though, that maybe art quilts are really not my thing. But, I'm usually up to try any technique at least once!
This quilt will be hanging in the Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival June 19-21. Are you planning to attend? If so, let me know as I'd love to meet you "in real life"! Thanks so much for stopping by Lollyquiltz.

  8. Happy Birthday, Carla! I LOVE your art quilt. If you aren't happy with it I'll bet you could sell it for a pretty penny!! And use the money to buy something you do love, or to go on an adventure of some kind. I would love to see it hanging in my home, and I may try to make my own version one day. Thanks for the inspiration, today and for many years. Yours is one of the first quilting blogs I ever found, and one I check very regularly. xo

  12. The quilt is terrific and so is your blog! Congratulations! I love Art quilts! Make another. The best clear thread I have found is the YLI one. The Superior moms poly is really thin and hard for me to thread the needle. Other threads seem to snap. Love the YLI I and have used it a lot, not in the bobbin.

  15. I love this. No more words.
(It is smaller than I realised. Your feet help give scale.)
Happy birthday, Carla! (Yes, I am late. Sorry.)

  16. Happy Blogaversary! This little quilt is amazing--I love it. You really are good at artsy quilts, but maybe you just don't like to do them? (I still love your Four-in-Art series!). I have always wanted to try a tulle overlay--you inspire me!

  17. I like this! I too never use invisible thread. It makes me itch.
It's good that you'll try anything once because there are so many kinds of art quilting, that you never know.

  18. How neat that your birthday is when you began your blog! I didn't know that. Happy birthday, a bit late. (I'm sorry.) I know you struggled to finish this quilt, but I'll say your efforts were worth it. It turned out great! And I'm happy you'll be sharing it at the KCRQF. I hope you get to meet lots of quilters, "for real."
