Distraction Sewing

Stephanie's block for the Mid-Century Modern Bee took a little bit of time, but the end result is this Gorgeous Gertie designed by Lily's Quilts.
The little parts all come together precisely with paper piecing. It's even neat from the back!
I love the block and am looking forward to seeing all twelve together. You can check out some of the other combos here.
The truth is, it felt good to be sewing again. I've been pretty distracted by news from Nepal as my son helps with relief efforts there. He has been interviewed several times by Skype for local stations. It's been wonderful seeing and hearing him! Lauren and the children have left Nepal and will be coming back to the U.S. happy about that.
You can read a couple of Drew's latest blog posts written since the earthquake here and here. Thank you for praying for Nepal.

  1. I hope it didn't hurt your brain too much! Did you realise how many pieces are in this block! Congrats on great fabric choices! It's a beauty!

  2. Oh is there some way to find the paper piecing for that block--it is just gorgeous...hugs, Julierose

    1. Yes, you can find the free pattern here. Scroll down to find the Gorgeous Gertie.

  3. Wow! That is one gorgeous block!!!!

  4. You made that block beautifully, Carla, in spite of the time it took to put it together. Glad you were able to spend time with your sewing machine again. Yes, I imagine it's a good distraction from Drew, though I'm sure it's a relief to know Lauren and the kids are away from there. Still praying good things for Drew. Did you see that Jamberry Nails is offering a nail wrap just for Nepal relief?

  5. Lots of little pieces! That's my kind of block!

  6. In horrid times, distraction is key!
What a great block! In one way, it is perfect for a bee – spreading the fiddly load among many hands. On the other hand, it could be a mess – all the variation! Of course, you MCBM ladies will do them all beautifully.

  7. I love the fabrics you chose for this block! It was challenging for sure. Nepal is so sad. I have been trying to keep up with your posts on FB. It is heartbreaking.

  8. Your block is beautiful Carla! I don't know how you were able to focus on it with the tragedy of Nepal, but I can also see where it was a welcome distraction. I am thankful your family is safe and appreciate the updates you have provided. You have been in my thoughts and prayers.

  9. Love your block Carla. You and I used the same horse for the center.
