Nifty Nine Patches

You just can't beat a good 9-Patch block in my world. Back in February, I began combining 2-inch squares as leader/enders to create 128 Nine Patches. Over the weekend the last one was stitched together!
Once I get them all pressed and combined with the 128 five-patch leader/ender blocks that I sewed up earlier, I'll have all the makings for another Free Quilt. I can hardly wait to see all these scraps together in one quilt. Stay tuned for that in 2014.
As i finished up the leader/ender 9 patches, I made up two more for Mary, whose the queen bee for December in the Mid-Century Modern Bee. Quite a size difference, huh!
Mary's blocks finish up at 15 inches while mine are only 4.5 inches! She plans to combine hers with some basket blocks she is whipping up....(I'm sure looking forward to seeing those baskets!) For fabrics, she requested reproduction-like styles combined with text prints. I'm hoping that she approves of my choices,
I enjoyed getting into my drawer full of reproduction scraps so much that I decided to make two blocks!
I think that I might try mixing a few repros into my quilts  a little more in the future. How do you feel about reproductions?

  2. Yes, use more of those pretty repro fabrics! They are far too nice to be hidden away! I LOVE both of those orange prints! (Maybe they could find their way into some + and x blocks? :-))

  3. How fun! Four of my favorite quilty things...The Square...The Nine-Patch...Leaders and Enders....and the FREE "quilt within a quilt". (cute size and fabric choices as well)
Thank you for sharing through blogging and inspiring 'the readers' like me. Merry Christmas!

  4. Can't beat a 9 patch! I think repros mix well with modern fabrics as long as the color is bright enough. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store for 2014!

  8. Your bee blocks are wonderful. I like vintage a lot yet have very little in my stash so I hope my block for Mary will fit in. Just how did you do your little nine patches . . . did you sew together two squares at the beginning and end of every thing you worked on till you had enough pairs?

  10. Great blocks, Carla! Both the little ones and the big ones. I can't believe how you manage to make so many free quilts. You do that SO well! I made two blocks for Mary too, but my motive wasn't as altruistic. I just wanted to try to use up my repros because I don't care much for them anymore. I have a bag of Aunt Grace 30's prints that haven't been touched in several years, until Mary's request came in. I think you can guess that I'm not fond of reproduction prints.

  13. I love reproduction prints, it's what got me started in quilting. I haven't used them in a few years but recently pulled them out again and started adding them in with more modern prints. Love everything you do. Happy New Year
