<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many of you know that I have nine grandchildren that I adore. This is Jane who is a second grader and recently turned eight. Getting her ears pierced, finally getting to wear glasses like her sister, and getting a new quilt from her Lolly are three top things on her "This Makes Me Happy List"! Her little brother, Edmund, looks pretty happy too!</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I try to always have a Leader/Ender project that I'm sewing on as I make another quilt. The nine patch blocks for Jane's quilt were pieced as leader/enders way back in 2011. They waited patiently to become a finished quilt...so glad it works that way!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirgQFH5DQGJYriDqhm-V8Xvx2BHOqHrGLnm5YXoc_LGFTyzI3ODAEViAescV70TG-4Jhc67JKOxkOwST1i3IeKjDVQYFR-OhJGiVG-IcDNlZrw2our2PJdOWssCG8k2sQZmFmSpAuCNXEw/s1600/IMG_1789.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirgQFH5DQGJYriDqhm-V8Xvx2BHOqHrGLnm5YXoc_LGFTyzI3ODAEViAescV70TG-4Jhc67JKOxkOwST1i3IeKjDVQYFR-OhJGiVG-IcDNlZrw2our2PJdOWssCG8k2sQZmFmSpAuCNXEw/s640/IMG_1789.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you've never used leader/enders, but would like to try it with your scraps, there is a tutorial in my sidebar that explains the process. It's a great scrap buster and just takes a little planning and organization. It's a habit that I don't want to break!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This was Jane's reaction to her new quilt....it makes my heart burst with pleasure! Right away she began looking for fabrics that she recognized from clothing I've made for her. I remember doing the same thing with scrap quilts that my grandmother made!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Fifteen quilts. Fifteen young people on the other side of the world. A match made in heaven, I think.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It was a special day. My husband, Fred, and son, Drew, called each child up to the front one at a time and presented them with a quilt. Fred</span><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> explained that it had been made especially for them and that no one would ever take it from them. I had labeled each quilt with a name.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">These children are all disabled and lead a much more challenging life than I ever will. Because of the cultural caste system in Nepal they are usually overlooked.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Often I've heard quilters comment about a quilt they are giving away that it is JUST for charity, usually said about a project made with fabric that they dislike or is of low quality. I have a different view and want the quilts that I give to always be beautiful and ones that I would be proud to gift to family or friends. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You may recognize this quilt as being made using the "Village" pattern by Miss Rosie's Quilt Company. It was a lot of fun to create each little house using five inch charms from my stash collection. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The builder went on strike before the entire village of 132 houses were constructed, so my village is more of a hamlet, I guess, with 64 homes. As written, the quilt would have been quite a bit larger if I had kept going and made spaces between my buildings. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Quilters are some of the most generous people in the world. I see it all the time, don't you?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lisa is the perfect example, stepping up when she heard that I was wanting to gift quilts to sixteen children in Nepal.These are the fabulous creations she handed to me one evening before a quilt guild meeting.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7Tj8feo-cWI_ctxwXYNn-lV_3F5CyQe1_3Vr3mVakToN1nfvA29Kl0rjHBG0PN746vriRDWpZM_3Dq5Jx5QLyTzWGGStqIhynHplTXWdlqsH0CKxhPnWc1Z_S3ejerWNqoFl3Wnlx8OuF/s1600/IMG_5531.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7Tj8feo-cWI_ctxwXYNn-lV_3F5CyQe1_3Vr3mVakToN1nfvA29Kl0rjHBG0PN746vriRDWpZM_3Dq5Jx5QLyTzWGGStqIhynHplTXWdlqsH0CKxhPnWc1Z_S3ejerWNqoFl3Wnlx8OuF/s640/IMG_5531.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This Plus and X quilt was not a quick quilt to create and yet Lisa was happy to give it to Bijay, a young boy disabled in the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6XLnXxfEZ129-vKIVOKAiT_fTrVx5Q9fRJGf3ZfutXbHXhxZsaio8ccBlFdFKjij7ICMNi5MDERhS7dsy_ioo97rdMtQiXZiEn0Aog5jRC2V8huoZqG2aF8NEr_vCc76K02fCHrMgIS1N/s1600/IMG_5535.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6XLnXxfEZ129-vKIVOKAiT_fTrVx5Q9fRJGf3ZfutXbHXhxZsaio8ccBlFdFKjij7ICMNi5MDERhS7dsy_ioo97rdMtQiXZiEn0Aog5jRC2V8huoZqG2aF8NEr_vCc76K02fCHrMgIS1N/s640/IMG_5535.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm betting that fourteen year old, Milan, is loving this improv quilt as much as I do. Lisa is an art teacher and her quilts are an expression of her talent.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0YISMKE2mBa306H6R-ejb0SbvmB_8avBMboh5Sk-RKY5PqgPs3XZSW8kcc2Zm8DUiCfOAGLTBN0QuvJCtezDZZMXBOOqsP6FT32fj2AGOkS5xHTfzNWmCwcYLFSmP4CffVt-qB_amw9QJ/s1600/IMG_5534.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0YISMKE2mBa306H6R-ejb0SbvmB_8avBMboh5Sk-RKY5PqgPs3XZSW8kcc2Zm8DUiCfOAGLTBN0QuvJCtezDZZMXBOOqsP6FT32fj2AGOkS5xHTfzNWmCwcYLFSmP4CffVt-qB_amw9QJ/s640/IMG_5534.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This third gifted quilt is made with hand-dyed fabrics and Lisa told me that she would like for the quilt to be given to someone very special. My daughter-in-law and I decided to pass the beautiful quilt, which is a bit larger than all of the others, to Bikash and his wife, Bijata. The young Nepali couple have the responsibility of caring for the kids who live at P. G.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNQ0JBL0r92r6v1_-3HpWJ6cSvroHQBSi2_Sk7Su3O0BivK_LKGbkK_YAor6kRdmzbJq-2wLolUgn8EEWxWCctppCgGQcEjE0nEF3enaGFdH1pbiIMcz5k0XZvMYGFaUXvTCskF_Nfz-UW/s1600/IMG_5532.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNQ0JBL0r92r6v1_-3HpWJ6cSvroHQBSi2_Sk7Su3O0BivK_LKGbkK_YAor6kRdmzbJq-2wLolUgn8EEWxWCctppCgGQcEjE0nEF3enaGFdH1pbiIMcz5k0XZvMYGFaUXvTCskF_Nfz-UW/s640/IMG_5532.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Lastly, I want to feature a couple of lap size quilts given by my friend, Patty. The Kansas dugout top as well as the modern liberated top, both pieced by Sharon, were beautifully quilted by Patty and passed along for the kids. I made the quilt on the right below using a pattern by Cindy, LiveaColorfulLife. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'm excited to have been given a photo of two of the lap quilts, at home with their new owners, Raj and Sanu. Both boys are wheelchair bound and will enjoy having warm wraps. That handsome guy on the right is my son, Drew.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My next post will feature the last three quilts for the Children's Home. Thanks for taking a look!</span>Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13368655338665362173noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046712351373941186.post-17455620791037511052018-10-16T20:11:00.000-05:002018-10-31T21:43:30.522-05:00Candy Box Sampler<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If quilt blocks were chocolates, it would be difficult to pick just one favorite from this box of deliciousness!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaSDEla80BuimCZvqKFvTNTR5r9Uc_oBkVnD6EJYA10a0Ak3RQRwECV2708RDJ9XYEZbQ8u8m0fojy1Zp4QLyDwZ4KlGrKR4DyhAiPVQUkwWmvLVdasPda5-Tpo-RUAVh15PFRXAAdPNe8/s1600/IMG_5475.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaSDEla80BuimCZvqKFvTNTR5r9Uc_oBkVnD6EJYA10a0Ak3RQRwECV2708RDJ9XYEZbQ8u8m0fojy1Zp4QLyDwZ4KlGrKR4DyhAiPVQUkwWmvLVdasPda5-Tpo-RUAVh15PFRXAAdPNe8/s640/IMG_5475.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once again, I am featuring blocks created by my friend, Sharon, and generously gifted to me by her family following her death. Each one is uniquely modern in style and color choice. I do not know the pattern source. If you recognize the designer, please let me know.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR0ynZiqtLZkuTQVXvVryXVMn-qqIyz7eva05WsyGX2HA1BzhuO7INom6IKdgpeXlpXb1tDwgObXojU7nOtvRoQ6i2Gh839Ajjc4R5s2XFjtPSawfltsod4KF29im6PPRaUR7XMepU7r1R/s1600/IMG_5503.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR0ynZiqtLZkuTQVXvVryXVMn-qqIyz7eva05WsyGX2HA1BzhuO7INom6IKdgpeXlpXb1tDwgObXojU7nOtvRoQ6i2Gh839Ajjc4R5s2XFjtPSawfltsod4KF29im6PPRaUR7XMepU7r1R/s640/IMG_5503.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sharon had already started sashing the blocks with light grey solid on two sides. Staggering the blocks this way is a fun setting for the six inch blocks. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvL2TT4OZmS3IkXb-hSBxbSijONtPU5f8KhdkmwafF-txF7ExEoImw6qbS_dwn86tF4xwznJTZEf-wlpWC3pG1f_Rt6PcMl8EYV9ImKOLO97y__zDF6TlOEhmeYNT319NcEwDmX8wUB5X_/s1600/IMG_5479.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvL2TT4OZmS3IkXb-hSBxbSijONtPU5f8KhdkmwafF-txF7ExEoImw6qbS_dwn86tF4xwznJTZEf-wlpWC3pG1f_Rt6PcMl8EYV9ImKOLO97y__zDF6TlOEhmeYNT319NcEwDmX8wUB5X_/s640/IMG_5479.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By adding a darker grey border and wide strip to separate some of the rows, I was able to lengthen the quilt to 80 inches, long enough to cover a child's cot at P. G.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mod quilting with a light grey thread and backed with bright green print, I was very tickled with how this quilt turned out....perfect for a thirteen year old girl named Somati.</span>Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13368655338665362173noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046712351373941186.post-82240722513807924062018-10-10T21:51:00.000-05:002018-10-31T21:44:31.611-05:00Festivity<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I used a layer cake of Amy Butler fabric plus some random fabrics from my stash with similar style. Each ten inch square was simply cut in half to create rectangles and then pieced into rows.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The blocks in this sampler quilt date back seven years to 2011. They were traded through an online quilting bee organized on Flickr. Remember Flickr? </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They had been sitting in a bag on my UFO shelf just waiting to see the light of day again. The 12 orange and aqua blocks were made by quilters from many states in the US as well as several countries and sent to me to put together. In return, each of them received a block from me in the colors they had chosen. Turning them on point, and adding solid aquas from my stash along with a grey/white stripe, I was able to stretch the blocks into a 60"x 80" quilt. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The mod square quilting makes for a cozy texture when washed and dried. Laxmi, a thirteen year old teenage girl who is disabled because of a leg amputation, will be the new owner of this colorful quilt created by people from around the world. I love thinking about the many hands touching these fabrics which were mailed to me in Kansas City and then carried by my husband to Kathmandu, Nepal and put into Laxmi's hands!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Like the last quilt that I featured on Wednesday, this quilt was made using blocks beautifully pieced by my friend, Sharon. Because I didn't have enough blocks for a Trip-Around-the-World, it seemed appropriate to make a Half-Way-Around quilt as it is traveling to Nepal on the other side of the globe.</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tula Pink designed a fun fabric line called "Chipper". All of the prints in this maze styled quilt are from that line of fabric. Each block was pieced by my friend, Sharon, before she passed away from breast cancer. I was able to enlarge the collection into a 60"x80" quilt by adding the solid charcoal grey and lower dotty border after assembling the blocks into a square.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The setting idea came from seeing a quilt named "Twinkle" in Deborah Fisher's book "Quilt Giving". Since my beginning center square measurements were different than Deborah's instructions, I sort of free-handed the grey solid triangles to get it to my desired size.</span> </div>

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I also tried, a new-to-me all over quilting motif for the Chipper top. The mod rectangles were a lot of fun to create and add a wonderful texture to the quilt.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I decided to call this quilt Hashtag because...well, I think that's what it looks like: a set of colorful hashtags. The pattern from Gudrun Erla's book, "Strip Your Stash" , is actually called Pixie Stix. That's cute too. This is a great book, by the way! I borrowed it from my local library, but may need a copy of my own.</span><br />

I was at a quilting retreat when I attempted to piece the first block for the quilt and those around me will agree that I was pulling out my hair for a bit. I found that there is a method to the madness and, once I got going, it was a fun quilt to make.</span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQkUCc9H4KZXEIHyBV2QficFWzCmuV11YKOp52HbVMZux4b-ihfQbTaQ74w0WD7gBYa6eYEop6GpFrxAAIX3Di017yq-BUf9x57Y7UZIgOwb9L4yVdSW9CLWOa2p6bDEoYM0pHQaPnEwRF/s1600/IMG_5360.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1562" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQkUCc9H4KZXEIHyBV2QficFWzCmuV11YKOp52HbVMZux4b-ihfQbTaQ74w0WD7gBYa6eYEop6GpFrxAAIX3Di017yq-BUf9x57Y7UZIgOwb9L4yVdSW9CLWOa2p6bDEoYM0pHQaPnEwRF/s400/IMG_5360.JPG" width="390" /></a><br />
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Simple wavy lines for the quilting make it have a soft hand: perfect for a child's cozy quilt. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sixteen comfort quilts for the children's home in Kathmandu, Nepal flew out early this morning with a team of seven, including my husband and my son. Thank you Susan, Lisa, Sue, Janette, and Patty for helping me achieve my goal of one quilt for each child! And special thank you to Sharon Brandli's family for the beautiful blocks that were given to me after her death. I was able to use them to create the three quilts in the center of this photo above. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I found some quilt labels among my stash and used them to identify a recipient for each quilt. The labels were machine stitched on, as was the binding, for sturdiness.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One evening, at my modern quilt guild meeting, Lisa surprised me by handing me these three beauties! Their additions became the final pieces of the puzzle of securing quilts for everyone! The star quilt on the right is made with hand-dyed fabrics. I am humbled.</span>Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13368655338665362173noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046712351373941186.post-76076404018392320412018-09-26T22:25:00.000-05:002018-10-31T22:03:17.319-05:00Bright Checkerboard<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here's another scrappy quilt made entirely of two and a half inch squares from the basket of squares that I always have on hand. It is definitely a favorite of mine.</span> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFizj5B6UXQEAmkn6gDUBsbGzSUH_URYOLnrtM6xVH3E5Tei_qi9T9-slOCpfzaPReAB8JhR1gYT9flQbpXnGQWXUBj0msf_0WKaiX6HkOKbH31fNybHdvy11NGLA89YQIj2yb2-ryBpm8/s1600/IMG_4696.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1483" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFizj5B6UXQEAmkn6gDUBsbGzSUH_URYOLnrtM6xVH3E5Tei_qi9T9-slOCpfzaPReAB8JhR1gYT9flQbpXnGQWXUBj0msf_0WKaiX6HkOKbH31fNybHdvy11NGLA89YQIj2yb2-ryBpm8/s400/IMG_4696.JPG" width="370" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The quilts going to Nepal are all around 60" x 80". Big enough to fit atop the cots that the children sleep on. An eleven year old little girl named Nisha will get to cuddle with this colorful checkerboard soon.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is actually the second Bright Checkerboard quilt I have made in the last year. In April, I made one for my granddaughter, Pearl, to celebrate turning five! </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Both of these quilts, as well as the previous two going to the Nepali children, were made as leader/ender projects while I created other quilts. If you are wondering what leader/enders are, check the tutorials on the sidebar of this blog for instructions. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sometimes, simple patchwork is my favorite kind of quilt.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg33IZppa9NtpvoCpnaUMTr9HoRdyH9F6T_eyio-q59FJ8-X11czHqgVf4bf3mRfaRCYoOIVwIY1Jw1pdQNYNNdXq6GNJVWtBONY5gKAwD7zZnYvT6QKDRiPphEXrraWBerDBszJCwG9vmB/s1600/IMG_5330.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg33IZppa9NtpvoCpnaUMTr9HoRdyH9F6T_eyio-q59FJ8-X11czHqgVf4bf3mRfaRCYoOIVwIY1Jw1pdQNYNNdXq6GNJVWtBONY5gKAwD7zZnYvT6QKDRiPphEXrraWBerDBszJCwG9vmB/s400/IMG_5330.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This one went together so quickly! Three and a half inch squares were picked from my scrap basket of squares. I pre-cut them from leftovers as I create other projects. The grey dot is even leftover from another quilt as is the red binding.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd-Au4beadW0Dk5csDwMQwtQlbCWoC9izdGcghcUVRjWyu-P2swksuFd1RZMkktd4mkjcMxkIywjQ1GwDi1Ro560hCuQQzbJNOtSYlyTprerkJF2Xy89TKnVots_n8sERefqx3lbi-YDOT/s1600/IMG_5333.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhd-Au4beadW0Dk5csDwMQwtQlbCWoC9izdGcghcUVRjWyu-P2swksuFd1RZMkktd4mkjcMxkIywjQ1GwDi1Ro560hCuQQzbJNOtSYlyTprerkJF2Xy89TKnVots_n8sERefqx3lbi-YDOT/s400/IMG_5333.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you are wanting to create a quilt quickly, like I did, consider a simple patchwork design from your scrap basket. It's so satisfying to see it come together almost effortlessly!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Raj will be receiving his quilt before the week is over. I'm hoping to see a photo of him holding the quilt. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You may recall that my son, Drew, and his family were in Nepal in April 2015 when a devastating category 7.8 earthquake rocked that region of our world. Nearly 9,000 were killed and almost 22,000 people injured. Over three years later, the effects are still evident and injured children living in remote villages find it difficult to receive medical treatment and care for their handicaps. </span><br />

Next week, Drew will be traveling with a team of doctors and nurses to Nepal where they will not only visit the Children's Home but also travel into remote areas offering free medical care to those who have none. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My husband, Fred, is excited to be accompanying Drew and the medical team, helping out where ever he can. The patchwork quilt that you see here, with the ombre blue sashing, will be packed into a suitcase and given as a gift to a boy named Sanu to brighten his bed. There is a quilt for each child, handpicked by Lauren, from the ones made by loving hands here in Kansas City. I enjoyed seeing Lauren ponder over the quilts as she made choices to match each child's personality and tastes. Lauren has just returned from her own trip to Nepal, accompanied by two of my grandchildren, Ezra and Lois. Here's Lois with the quilt...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yes, it has been awhile. Like three years! But, I've been thinking about brushing off the cobwebs and blogging about my quilting again. It's such a great way to document what I make, so even if no one reads blogs anymore, it might be fun! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I've been busy, as you can see by this stack of quilts that will soon be flying to Nepal with my husband and son. They will brighten the beds of 15 handicapped children living together in a children's home. I'm pretty excited to have been a part of making it happen!</span>Carlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13368655338665362173noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7046712351373941186.post-37488975691813585232015-07-07T21:04:00.000-05:002015-07-07T21:04:29.322-05:00Gone Astray!<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A few have you have noticed my absence. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I barely let my husband sit on the couch, poor guy. You never know when that next house shopper is going to want to stop by! No, we don't have a house in mind to buy. We have just decided that the time is right to move back to "town". It's an adventure!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You may remember that I've been sewing in my bedroom for several years. Well, that might seem strange to potential buyers, so I've moved to this cute cubby in the basement. I love the lighting...so much better than the bedroom. It's also very cool during the hot summer days. Now, if I can just find time to sew!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I did make my three year old granddaughter, Lois, a little dress a while back to welcome her home from Nepal. Do you see those words "easy-to-sew"?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Well...Miss Simplicity lied. This placket was a killer. It looks simple, doesn't it? That's just what I thought. But, no! Trust me on that. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My sewing time has been limited lately, but this week I carved out a few hours to recharge my batteries and finish up my project for the KCMQG Quilt-Along using Sherri Lynn Wood's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Improv-Handbook-Modern-Quilters-Courageously/dp/1617691380/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1434152028&sr=1-1&keywords=the+improv+handbook+for+modern+quilters">new book</a> on liberated piecing.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQT4yo7wiWFbIxUj8Jz0Cu7AsCMAUnfyLoaA7bheVyT7NHP3T3MKKynqJMranh-RMUiWE8TSBQV4Zl75GN6524DfU-Li-NAt-_OTvncfn0rH6_jyG1GOsXE1kpvRyskiaT9PIDkr1ShtUc/s1600/IMG_1612.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQT4yo7wiWFbIxUj8Jz0Cu7AsCMAUnfyLoaA7bheVyT7NHP3T3MKKynqJMranh-RMUiWE8TSBQV4Zl75GN6524DfU-Li-NAt-_OTvncfn0rH6_jyG1GOsXE1kpvRyskiaT9PIDkr1ShtUc/s640/IMG_1612.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Sherri Lynn led a workshop for the KC Modern Guild a few month back and some of us got hooked on her fun methods! We enjoyed ourselves so much so, that we've decided to work through the book, one chapter at a time, and challenge ourselves to make up a project using each of the 10 Scores included in her book. Floating Squares is up first.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTrRIoUoBZmQQaGvyIUzhuKrs7U13U1WvIlySkxLXAYQsHQL257OIVUydPtNLEk9yVn-Bzd-L3QA7VYHl8tKKWPcDkstAm_wm8dc6X_atuimCdFaVLphYYqA6aEXg36ve3bjlzPDkpK1M3/s1600/IMG_1605.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTrRIoUoBZmQQaGvyIUzhuKrs7U13U1WvIlySkxLXAYQsHQL257OIVUydPtNLEk9yVn-Bzd-L3QA7VYHl8tKKWPcDkstAm_wm8dc6X_atuimCdFaVLphYYqA6aEXg36ve3bjlzPDkpK1M3/s400/IMG_1605.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Lately, I've been drawn to fabrics by Kaffe Fassett and have managed to accumulate a nice collection. I've decided this QAL was a fine spot to start using the fabrics instead of just collecting them. For the floating squares method, you only need three fabrics. Here are my choices, cut into various square shapes without using a ruler...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg579eUfDI_l8hP4scxZ35ITafOjkMLNZyUQrIN69Vd2uOVUfRwnxvMwiHUwLg8VRkbCqrvyQxbAhRy8-pWJk6LwJxj_syktGvPZK09Kulbwb1WYxt_kBfs8_oyHFeGS06-kV3m6DFKyn0n/s1600/IMG_1604.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg579eUfDI_l8hP4scxZ35ITafOjkMLNZyUQrIN69Vd2uOVUfRwnxvMwiHUwLg8VRkbCqrvyQxbAhRy8-pWJk6LwJxj_syktGvPZK09Kulbwb1WYxt_kBfs8_oyHFeGS06-kV3m6DFKyn0n/s400/IMG_1604.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Using white as a filler fabric, I began by sewing a couple of squareish shapes together...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDDnmaqv8Zzh6vvep1lf-ae4TnW5EVlpOOe9tgbqA2z6maV6H8Q_ql0YHdcXswnxpRdUfK5wIELO8q9wjnmPlsSnqq0ph9fkNS6WZ90RNGMiZb4NrNw_bdNz1-3bYW1cHMJI88DgNGkqLz/s1600/IMG_1606.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDDnmaqv8Zzh6vvep1lf-ae4TnW5EVlpOOe9tgbqA2z6maV6H8Q_ql0YHdcXswnxpRdUfK5wIELO8q9wjnmPlsSnqq0ph9fkNS6WZ90RNGMiZb4NrNw_bdNz1-3bYW1cHMJI88DgNGkqLz/s400/IMG_1606.jpg" width="400" /></a>...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">...until I had formed a section like this. In the beginning, I had planned to join together several sections made of different fabrics.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo1vpGyw1hEdvV7XczafGWak9xtoIjsL5H1sQUNoisxQMMkhQYHkVqaTUfmhZuJHNhEAVvVSt3c3-4HJWbgxygRgcZf_MLFfTknx7lSZIO6NA6jKyslFfUmt4er-L2WrbIkjW8SSxAZihX/s1600/IMG_1608.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo1vpGyw1hEdvV7XczafGWak9xtoIjsL5H1sQUNoisxQMMkhQYHkVqaTUfmhZuJHNhEAVvVSt3c3-4HJWbgxygRgcZf_MLFfTknx7lSZIO6NA6jKyslFfUmt4er-L2WrbIkjW8SSxAZihX/s640/IMG_1608.jpg" width="494" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">But, it just wasn't doing anything for me so I continued on with the aqua, pink and white original choices until I had used up most of the Kaffee print and pink Cherrywood solid. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIVTv49-bk9siUGvihQ442bVaTKKZ1uzAjBtJAvnHRM47k3ISxtXSldBxntCi4zRaTjyNnWZOLuguKSWNW3O8zwmEn7q_Kxtxu2eM79B_PI48LkEUH__ykwYli67BdnD87TdU-4hTJ7oDG/s1600/IMG_1611.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="440" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIVTv49-bk9siUGvihQ442bVaTKKZ1uzAjBtJAvnHRM47k3ISxtXSldBxntCi4zRaTjyNnWZOLuguKSWNW3O8zwmEn7q_Kxtxu2eM79B_PI48LkEUH__ykwYli67BdnD87TdU-4hTJ7oDG/s640/IMG_1611.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Once I squared up the edges, the top measures about 24 inches by 26 inches. Since the fabrics are sometimes not joined on the straight grain, I sewed along the edges to keep everyhing from stretching out of shape. At this point, I'm not certain if I will create a small quilt from my effort or join other "scores" to it to make a larger quilt top. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">What fun I had making these cute baskets for <a href="http://carla-graceandfavour.blogspot.com/">Carla</a>! June is her month as the queen bee for the Mid-Century Modern Bee. She chose well, I think, don't you! What a darling quilt she will have after she collects all the pretty baskets.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Making the liberated blocks reminded me of how much I enjoyed sewing my own basket quilt a few years ago. Here's my favorite ...tall and skinny.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">At the top, I used some wonky letters to spell out the word baskets (in case someone mistakes them for pails, I guess.).</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Once, someone very close to me described me as a Quilt Factory. Another time, a family member asked me how many more quilts I'd make before I was finished. Not sure how to take these comments, it has caused me to ponder, at times, why I do what I do. This is a pile of quilts that I collected a few years ago to give away to children I've never met.....</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNqXP7z3bA5kaXJ-tCo7u2NWYPyt0gUUmLZSQQsJKKuObo8rq9isXBIHE4lBOdqFOaE1USUGNw27INXG-h_0A27mQvnhfBASVBPCM-nqM8oxjY9xMVfZuHL0gxK-GNGnbAASMiciypeIn2/s1600/IMG_1282.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="456" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNqXP7z3bA5kaXJ-tCo7u2NWYPyt0gUUmLZSQQsJKKuObo8rq9isXBIHE4lBOdqFOaE1USUGNw27INXG-h_0A27mQvnhfBASVBPCM-nqM8oxjY9xMVfZuHL0gxK-GNGnbAASMiciypeIn2/s640/IMG_1282.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Some of these quilts I made myself and others were lovingly created by a few other women, who, like me, enjoy giving something handmade to special people... To show them love and value... To give them comfort and encouragement. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Oh, there are lots of other reasons to make quilts.... being creative; loving pretty fabric; using my hands; hanging out with like-minded people; mastering a challenging pattern; learning something new; I'm really a hoarder; it's just fun....on and on. But, o</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">n the bottom rung of all the other reasons that I quilt, is that foundation, I think: Giving.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A few weeks ago, a fellow quilter asked if anyone would like to buy an extra quilt she had. It was kind of a new thought for me, as I've never sold any of my quilts. Would I have the same love for quilting if I was making them to sell? </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Not sure. But this I am sure of....I love to give away things that I make. Especially to children. Some that I'll probably never meet.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;">My son, Drew, took several quilts with him to Nepal. This little boy has become very special to him.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I think that quilts can matter. Do you?</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">We called them maxi-skirts back in the '70's. Now they are popular again. Even kindergarteners want one, it seems! I used some double gauze fabric purchased recently from <a href="http://www.sunnydayfabric.com/">Sunny Day Fabrics</a> to make Lula's dream come true...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I've used this Burda 9442 pattern <a href="http://lollyquiltz.blogspot.com/2014/06/summer-of-skirt.html">before</a> and knew that it was a great fit and cute style. The double gauze is so soft and drapey...perfect for a skirt.</span><br />
